What Does It Mean To Be An Entrepreneur?

You might have heard this word many times before, or you maybe even consider yourself one. An entrepreneur, according to the dictionary, is “a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk.”

If you’ve embarked on an entrepreneurial journey, you might have other words to complement this definition. So for you, what does it really meant to be an entrepreneur?

Is it the crazy working hours?

Being an entrepreneur takes time, dedication and sacrifices. If you thought that working a 9-5 job was though, working from before everybody wakes up until everyone is asleep during days, months and even years, it’s something that requires determination.

Managing your time can be hard while being an entrepreneur, with so many things to manage: meetings, emails, contacts, operations, people. Sometimes it’s hard to keep the focus and even harder to stay motivated when at the beginning, results are not there yet.

Is it not getting to see your friends and family so often?

In many cases, you have to sacrifice your leisure time, and sometimes that also means to sacrifice part of your social life. Being an entrepreneur means not being able to go on that weekend trip with your friends, or missing dinner at home for nights in a row.

The journey of an entrepreneur might get lonely at times, especially if you don’t count with the support of your loved ones, or if you are surrounded by people that question or don’t understand what you’re doing.

Is it failing over and over again?

Because not everything works on the first try, and you must fail, so you can get up again and try something different. Ideas and plans change as your learning curve starts to go up. It requires a lot of creativity and guts.

Some people would describe the life of an entrepreneur as a bumpy road, and you need to have the stomach to ride it out.

Is it struggling with resources?

And it’s not only about the money (which is also important of course): it’s about the resources you need as an entrepreneur. A physical space to work, tools, equipment, and other facilities that will help your business grow.

And what would be of your business if you didn’t have the right team? The people you choose to share this path with is also very important, and sometimes, finding someone you can rely on can take time and bump into bad teammates.

But being an entrepreneur also means this:

Working on something that you really love

Let’s put it this way, working 8 hours a day for the rest of your life in something you actually hate is a lousy idea. However, as an entrepreneur, when you work on your passion plus something you are really good at, you can barely feel the 12-16 hours you spend working, because you’re enjoying it so much.

Being an entrepreneur it’s not about suffering 360 days a year and just enjoying those 5 days of holidays. It’s about enjoying each moment of what you do during the whole year.

Seeing your business grow and take shape

Being an entrepreneur is, in a way, like having a baby. It’s your creation and one of the best feelings is seeing all your effort materializing. You work towards something you believe in and you see it coming to life from scratch, and it gets even better when you start making a profit out of it. So, what else could you ask for?

Inspiring and helping other people

So, if you are an entrepreneur, you do what you love, you start making a profit and now, you realize you’re actually making an impact with your services or products. Seeing the life of people being changed or having some of your clients thanking you for what you’ve done, gives you a huge feeling of satisfaction.

When that happens you know that everything has been worth it. And, as that quote says “If it was easy, everyone would do it.”

Building a network of like-minded people

When you are an entrepreneur sometimes it gets lonely, but when you start doing what you love, you start moving with the right crowd. Because no one will understand you better than someone who is going through the same things as you.

Being an entrepreneur helps you realize how important your network is. Making connections with the right people can help you and help them to achieve your goals.
