Top 8 Small Construction Equipment

Owners in the industry know that you must have the proper small construction equipment to effectively run a construction business today. What exactly this construction machinery will be comprised of can vary greatly from one business to the next.

But any small business owner in the construction industry would agree that there’s simply no way to get the job done right without the proper tools.

With so much competition out there today, there’s no wiggle room when it comes to having inferior equipment—or lacking equipment altogether. This can lead to losing out on jobs to competitors and not being able to push your company forward.

If you aren’t sure what type of small construction equipment you might need, read on to see some of the top items a construction business needs.

8 must-have small construction equipment

Depending on the type of business and what you specialize in, there could be vastly different needs for construction machinery.

Some of this construction machinery can be quite expensive and would require construction equipment financing. Some are likely much lower scale and would be easier to fund with cash on hand.

1. Dump truck

A dump truck can come in handy for any construction business. That’s because contractors have to carry away discarded materials from job sites quite often. For example, in home-renovations, some of these items could include bathtubs, countertops, kitchen cabinets, drywall, and possibly even furniture.

Without a dump truck, it would be next to impossible to fit all of that debris away from the job site. In fact, if you don’t have a dump truck, you may have to outsource this part of the job, which in the long run could cost you significant money.

2. Concrete Mixer

If you’re in construction, you know how important concrete is to doing your job. That’s why you need a concrete mixer. This piece of small construction equipment can take on several different formsfrom big and expensive to small and more affordable.

There are large trucks that are solely for mixing concrete on a large scale. There are also smaller manual hand mixers for companies that don’t need as much concrete. It’s also possible to start small with a manual mixer and then upgrade to a larger, automatic one as your business grows.

3. Loader

A loader is one of the most basic yet important pieces of small construction equipment for business owners. They allow workers to move large, heavy, and sometimes dangerous materials from one place to another with ease.

This piece of construction machinery is a rather heavy and large vehicle with a bucket on the front of it. It is driven and controlled by a person in the cab of the vehicle. Without it, workers would have to use gloves and shovels to get the job done (which could take hours, even days).

There are a few different kinds of loaders, too, including two-in-one versions such as a backhoe loader.

4. Excavator

If you need to dig, then you’re going to need an excavator. This heavy construction machinery allows you to dig a hole in the ground with ease. It allows you to break through concrete and soil so that you can move material away from one place.

An excavator allows a construction business to complete the first step in the process before moving onto the next step. This could include pouring a new foundation for a home, installing underground pipes, and any other related tasks.

Excavators can also do other jobs, such as knocking down small structures. That’s why they’re so important for construction projects, both big and small.

Again, there are various excavators that can be used for smaller projects and larger ones, allowing your small business to grow into your needs.

5. Soil compactor

If your construction company creates new foundations for structures, then having a soil compactor will be key to your success. You may need this piece of equipment whether you’re a home renovator or if you build larger commercial buildings.

Before you’re able to pour your new concrete foundation, you need to create a stable ground on which to pour it. The proper way to do this today is to compact the soil that’s in the ground. Without doing this step, the structure you are building is prone to failing or being unsafe.

As a result, this piece of construction machinery could be one of the most important ones you have, depending on your specialty, of course.

A solid set of power tools that are customized to your construction business’s specialty is also crucial. This could include the basics such as power drills, power nailers, sanders, angle grinders, and reciprocating saws.

6. Hydraulic hammer

Other important smaller construction equipment is hydraulic hammers. These tools are used to break up concrete, rocks, or other hard structures.

These hydraulic hammers come in a variety of shapes and sizes, too. The most basic forms (that are the least expensive) are operated by a person holding them and pressing them down. You can also purchase a hydraulic hammer attached to the front of a loader for much larger jobs. This is much less work, but it’s also much more expensive.

7. Forklift

If you’re constantly dealing with constantly moving materials, a forklift could be a life-saver. These pieces of construction machinery are used to move materials over relatively short distances.

Most often, construction companies will use a forklift to take materials off a delivery pallet closer to the place on the job site where they will be used. Without a forklift, you will need multiple employees to break down the pallets and then lift them one by one onto a truck that can handle it.

8. Bulldozer

If you need to move a large quantity of material on the ground, then a bulldozer is the small construction equipment you’ll need. It’s basically a heavy tractor with a large blade on the front that can push sand, rubble, soil, snow, and other material out of the way.

If you are laying sand in an area before you put down sod at a home construction site, for example, a bulldozer is a great way to do it. This is a heavy piece of construction machinery, though, so not all small businesses may be able to afford one.

Benefits of equipment financing

While the above-listed small construction equipment would be beneficial to almost every small construction business, some of it can be quite expensive. This makes obtaining the equipment rather challenging if you don’t have a lot of cash on hand.

But don’t fret; construction equipment financing can help you obtain this necessary equipment without having to have a large amount of cash to purchase it outright.

There are a number of benefits to equipment financing.

  • For one, it allows you to immediately start increasing your revenue. The equipment will allow you to take on bigger jobs, and possibly even more jobs, from the minute you obtain it.
  • At the same time, equipment financing will help you reap the benefits of additional cashflow. The first way it will do this is through this additional revenue you’ll be seeing. The second is through the fact that you won’t be depleting your cash reserves to purchase the equipment outright.
  • By financing the small construction equipment purchase, you’ll be gaining a lot of cost certainty, too. You can work the monthly payments into your budget so that you can know what your new break-even mark will be.

This is a smart way of doing business.
