The importance of creating a community: Social Media Day

Can you remember the last time you checked your Facebook feed? 

When was the last time you opened Twitter?

Has it been long since you last uploaded a photo to Instagram?

Well, I have to admit that it’s been like 15 minutes since I checked my social media sites and now I’m feeling anxious to check them again. I believe we are all guilty (or at least, most of us) of using social apps more than we should. But this might not be such a bad thing after all (at least when it comes to your business).

If you can hone your entrepreneurial savvy whenever you open your facebook app, you might get more clients (there are thousands of people accessing social sites, you might as well turn them into potential customers).

It’s impossible to deny the importance of social media these days. It has been growing exponentially and now is so big, that many people cannot imagine their lives without logging in on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or any of the other social media sites.

To acknowledge the importance that these platforms have in our lives nowadays, Mashable (a worldwide media and entertainment platform) decided to commemorate June 30 as Social Media Day to “recognize and celebrate social media’s impact on global communication.”

During this day, you might find events, summits or conferences in your city that celebrate and explore social media.

And so, we’ve decided to join the celebration by helping you understand everything you need to know about these platforms and how to use them to boost your business.

What is social media (in simple terms)? 

Ok, let’s start from the beginning (and with the most basic stuff).

Social media are platforms (that can be accessed through their website or app), where people can create a profile to share photos, stories, thoughts, well… everything. Their users can also like, comment and share other user’s posts. 

That’s where the “social” aspect of social media is: interacting with other people through the internet.

Why is social media important for your business?

Well, for starters, everyone is there. And when I say everyone, I mean everyone. You’ll be able to find not only what I like to call regular users (just normal folk), but you can find celebrities (like writers, movie stars, singers, bands…), businesses (from small businesses to multinational companies), institutions, well… everyone.

Regular users love to interact with their friends, favorite brands and artists.

The community that you will create will be made up of like-minded people that are the perfect ambassadors for your brand. They will buy it, recommend it, and defend it.

If you want to be on your client’s mind, you need to be on their social feed too.

How many people use social media?

According to We Are Social’s Global Digital Reports 2019, by the start of the year there were 3.484 billion users worldwide.

All these users spend, on average, 2 hours and 16 minutes of their day on their favorite social media sites which is one-third of the almost 7 hours they spend online)

Which one is your favorite social app? 

Mine is Facebook, followed by Twitter and then, in 3rd place, is Instagram (and that’s about it for me, I guess I’m too old for the snapchats, the reddits, and the pinterests).

If you answered Facebook, well, you are part of the vast majority, as it is the platform that has the most active user accounts. So, if you want your business to have a presence on the internet, your best bet is to start a Facebook page.

Now that we’ve talked about its importance, let’s talk about why you need to start your social media marketing efforts.

What is social media marketing? 

Social media marketing is just what it sounds like, marketing that takes advantage of social platforms to advertise, get more visibility and clients (and getting to know them).

The best part? It’s free! (Unless, of course, you decide to use paid ads.)

So more than a social tool, social networks can be used as marketing tools that can reach millions of users every day. Managing your business’ social media by yourself is possible, although if you can pay for one, we recommend hiring a community manager (experts on social media marketing).

How to do social media marketing?

Social platforms are not about selling 24/7. If the only posts you write are promoting your products or services, the users will get bored (or even worse, annoyed at your constant ads) and will unlike you.

And unliking, my friend, is the worst thing that can happen in social media marketing.

You need to make the users fall in love with you, you want interaction. 

You need to build a community. A group of people that like the same things, enjoy the same stuff and that love your brand.

That’s how you use social sites. 

You can use different techniques to do it.

  • Give them quality content and information
  • Make them laugh (memes are the best way to do this nowadays)
  • Educate them (help them understand certain topics that the general public might not quite comprehend)
  • Answer their questions and comments
  • Don’t be cold and institutional, instead, be warm, approachable and 
  • Share things (post, videos, etc.) you find interesting or cool (or course, that are related to your industry)
  • You can always try to see what other great campaigns are doing it to try and replicate that success. 
  • And most importantly, post constantly (now, we don’t mean 10 times per hour, but do be consistent. If you don’t post for several days, you might lose followers.)

These are just some basic marketing tips for social media, but if you stick to them and you’re true to your brand, you’ll be on the right path.

How to use social media for business

Using social apps to promote your business is not rocket science, but it might not be the easiest thing at times. That’s why you should try using some programs that can help you along the way.

But in the end you don’t need fancy apps or programs to have great content on your Facebook feed, you just need to listen to the customers and be yourself.

If you haven’t started your social media efforts yet, it’s time to start. The people that will be part of your community are out there, waiting for you, ready to love your brand.
