This article will show you exactly how to make money online and why you should try.

Curious about starting a home business? Learn here how to do it.

For creative-types and freelancers…

Upwork

Upwork is a website were freelancers can search for short-term or long-term jobs or projects that enable you to work remotely.

What you’ll need: Following an easy sign-in process, with Upwork you will just need some time to establish your profile. This is pretty important because you want to sell yourself, your services, and make it very compelling. Then, after browsing through projects that might be of interest to you, take time to submit your profile to projects. Upwork highlights ideal jobs based on your professional experience.

How it benefits you: The greater the success you have on a project, the more you are likely to be hired again. You can create lifetime connections on Upwork with large companies or individual proprietors who might need your services down the line.

How much will you make:  You set your own rate per project or per hour, so the income you’ll receive is completely dependent on you. Typically, Upwork charges a small fee depending on how much you earn on one specific project.

Best for: Web development, mobile development, design, writing, marketing, accounting.

Fiverr

Fiverr is now the world’s largest marketplace for people to find “gigs,” aka jobs, or projects for a side income. The network functions similar to Upwork, but the main difference is you have to do more work to pitch yourself for a particular gig, whereas in Upwork you would just submit your already-made profile.

How it benefits you: You’ll be able to learn how to pitch yourself more efficiently and how to manage products quicker, as you’ll need to minimize the time spent on each gig to earn more money.

How much will you make: The default is $5 but you can attach extra services to gigs for more money.

For treasure junkies who love reselling…

Poshmark

Poshmark helps you get rid of any clothes you have laying around at home by selling them to users on the application. Virtually anyone can create their closet and sell their items for whatever the price may be — literally, you name it.

How it benefits you: Rather than having things lying around, make money online from old treasures you know will sell quickly.  Poshmark is not cheap, but it doesn’t have crazy fees, either.  Any item from a seller that is less than $15 incurs a $2.95 charge.  Anything over the $15 mark is charged 20%.

How much money will you make: As always, this depends on how much time you have to dedicate to the application. Learn about strategies to help with sales on the app, such as posting your listings at night and being very active on the application. Want to know the best part? There have been many reports of individuals making upwards of $1,200 in two months on Poshmark.

Similar re-selling sites range from the popular Craigslist to eBay, to Letgo, OfferUp, or Depop for vintage clothing.

For savvy marketers…

Blogging

If you’re an expert in digital marketing or want to establish yourself as a digital marketer, having a blog is almost a must in the industry — it certainly gives you leverage to have a successful blog when trying to find new business or clients who will use your services.

Blogging is a sustainable income source that just keeps growing if you allow it to grow. You might be wondering what you need to start a blog and learn how to make money online. For starters, choose a profitable need or fill a need. If you’re someone who consistently works with new hairstyling tools, and you’re wondering how these tools work on real people, feel free to take up space in that niche by creating your own blogs featuring demos and reviews. Then, pick the right domain name. From there, you need to build your offers and pitch companies once you start growing your audience (i.e. present ideas brands might be interested in paying you to create). Or, you can easily sell things like mini-email courses, full-blown training, ebooks, and so on.

What you’ll need: a business plan for your blog (first learn here how to make a business plan) and less than $100 to pick out a domain and create your website. Sites like Wix and Squarespace offer free templates, or you can opt to hire someone to design your site.

How much money will you make: The possibilities are endless but be prepared to dedicate major work to building and maintaining your audience before you can make money online.

Affiliate Marketing

One of the more passive, low-cost ways to learn how to make money online is affiliate marketing. What does this mean? It’s essentially a marketing arrangement by which an online retailer pays a commission to an external website (in this case, your website) for traffic or sales generated from its referrals. If you have a website, you can sign up for as an affiliate and source products from companies you love that would benefit from your content. Companies like Amazon, ClickBank, and eBay all have affiliate marketing programs.

How it benefits you: In most cases, you will need an active website with substantial traffic to get approved. If you have enough VPM’s (visitors per month), you can make a substantial amount of money from affiliate marketing, and maybe you can even start teaching your audience how to make money online.

How much money will you make: Think of affiliate marketing like fishing, just keep at it and eventually a fish will bite. For beginners, your aim should be to make your first sale and then your first $10 and so on. Focus on working with one company first, trying to make sales off your link and then start working with others. A majority of individuals can make around $20,000 a year using affiliate marketing if you have a highly trafficked websites and a loyal following.

For those of you who know a lot and can teach what you know…

Sell your education

No, we don’t mean the student loans you’re still trying to pay off 20 years later. We mean: sell what you know. There are loads of networks where you can sell your knowledge of a particular subject. For example, Udemy allows anyone to create an online course and get paid forever after as users take it up. For one-to-one tutoring, list yourself on Superprof or TutorMe.

How much money will you make: You can expect to earn upwards of $12 an hour, and you don’t have to be highly qualified to tutor younger students.

Webinars are also a great way to make money online. Let’s say you have upwards of 10,000 followers on social media that you train every week on a new social media skill. You’ll need a product or service to sell at some point and even if it’s $1 that’s $10,000 if everyone buys your service that day. One of the best webinar platforms out there is GoToWebinar.

If you have a car and want to use it….

Lyft and Uber have altered ride-sharing for eternity, and they’ve also provided a way for individuals to make supplemental income on their spare time. And depending on where you live (if the driver demand is high), you’ll be able to make a living off of driving. Drive for Uber or Lyft, or deliver for Postmates or even Amazon Flex.

Other great options for how to make money online…

If you’re thinking marketing and selling is not for you, and just want to make some good ol’ passive income, other options on how to make money online are below. Keep in mind, these are lower paying options that work for those who don’t necessarily want to “build a brand,” but just have some spare time or want rewards, in addition to money, for their time online.

Swagbucks

With Swagbucks, there are plenty of ways to make money, starting with online shopping, watching videos, answer surveys and surfing the web. The app gives you both cash back and gift cards as a reward for your efforts.

What you need: A few seconds to create your account and learn your way around the website.

How it benefits you: You can save big bucks using the gift cards earned on the website to retailers like Target, and websites like Amazon.

How much money will you make: Depending on how much time you have to take surveys, you can earn gift cards that will save you money at places like Amazon.

Similar to Swagbucks is Inbox Dollars which pays you for watching television, taking surveys and shopping, or Ebates, an app that offers a simple way to make money online by buying whatever you’re already buying and then getting a cash-back reward. With Ebates, there are no  receipts to scan. Simply click a link in the app and buy from the store. You’ll automatically be credited your cash rewards upon purchase along with receiving an email confirmation.

When trying to learn how to make money online, and after signing up for a few of the above sources, you might be wondering how taxes will work? Most websites will give you a 1099 form, which means you’ll have to pay taxes out-of-pocket during tax season. Depending on the gig, you might also be able to turn in a W-2… it all differs, but be sure to know the tax rules before getting started so you can plan ahead.
